USAID Scandal, DOGE Drama, Amy Acton?

Cleveland City Council member Joe Jones stepped down from his committee appointments following allegations of inappropriate behavior towards a local artist. Reports surfaced that he made comments making her feel uncomfortable, and previous complaints from City Hall staff added to the controversy. Council President Blaine Griffin initiated an investigation through an external law firm, but the bigger story became the internal dispute over leaked information rather than the allegations themselves. City officials were frustrated that the details made their way to the press, disrupting their efforts to control the narrative.

My Take: I’ve met Joe Jones before, and while he can come off as blunt, I never perceived him as inappropriate. That said, perception is reality. If people feel uncomfortable, that matters. What’s more concerning is the attempt to suppress information. This is public office—we deserve transparency. Holding onto secrets like this only erodes trust in local government.

Amy Acton’s Campaign for Governor

Former Ohio Health Director Dr. Amy Acton is launching a campaign for governor, with the Democratic Party seemingly rallying behind her. However, there are major gaps in her messaging—most notably, she hasn’t adequately addressed why she resigned during the height of the COVID-19 crisis. Her explanation that protestors outside her home influenced her decision lacks depth. Additionally, she has been largely absent from political engagement over the past four years, failing to advocate for major Democratic causes or support past campaigns.

My Take: Acton is an experienced public speaker, but she hasn't reckoned with the realities of her past decisions. If she couldn’t handle public pressure then, how will she fare as governor? The Democratic Party’s quick coalescing around her without exploring other potential candidates is yet another example of their unwillingness to foster real primary debates. The lack of competitive primaries is hurting the party’s ability to adapt and refine its messaging for the future.

The Democratic Party’s Leadership Shuffle

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has chosen a new chair, but little suggests that leadership will introduce substantive changes. The rhetoric remains the same: defend Biden’s policies without critical self-reflection. The party continues to double down on outdated strategies rather than recalibrating to win back working-class voters.

My Take: The Democratic Party needs to refocus on kitchen-table issues. They’ve lost ground with working-class Americans by prioritizing niche causes over broad economic and social concerns. The Republican Party, for all its faults, is bringing in younger candidates with populist messaging. If Democrats don’t adapt, they will keep losing ground.

The 60 Minutes Controversy

A lawsuit has emerged over allegations that 60 Minutes heavily edited Kamala Harris’s responses in a recent interview, removing significant portions of her answers. This raises concerns about media manipulation and selective framing. The debate now revolves around whether the media has the right to edit political figures’ responses and how that impacts public perception.

My Take: People are fed up with legacy media twisting narratives. With long-form podcasts and unedited interviews becoming more popular, mainstream media’s credibility is fading. If you need heavy edits to make a candidate look good, that’s a problem. Transparency should be the standard, and if networks won’t provide it voluntarily, they should at least disclose when an interview is edited.

Trump’s Gaza Comments and U.S. Policy Shifts

Donald Trump has reportedly suggested that the U.S. could forcibly relocate Palestinians from Gaza. This aligns with his administration’s close ties to Israel’s right-wing government and its history of aggressive foreign policy. These statements reinforce long-standing concerns about U.S. complicity in reshaping geopolitical landscapes for economic and strategic gain.

My Take: If anyone is surprised by this, they weren’t paying attention. Trump’s cabinet appointments and past comments foreshadowed this. The U.S. has long prioritized power and financial interests over genuine humanitarian efforts, regardless of which party is in charge. The outrage over these comments is justified, but predictable.

USAID and the Government Efficiency Debate

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), overseen by Elon Musk, targeted USAID for alleged mismanagement. The controversy stems from USAID's refusal to comply with Trump’s spending freeze, prompting an audit into its operations. Some argue that the agency is a crucial tool for diplomacy, while others see it as a vessel for regime change and wasteful spending.

My Take: Government waste needs to be addressed, and USAID should not be exempt from scrutiny. However, there’s also a serious conflict of interest with Musk overseeing an agency that could impact his business dealings. The broader issue is that Congress has failed in its oversight role for decades, allowing the executive branch to overreach.

Doge Hiring Controversy

A DOGE employee was fired after racist social media posts surfaced. However, JD Vance reportedly intervened to have him rehired. This has sparked debate over whether past online behavior should permanently disqualify someone from government work.

My Take: Young people make mistakes, and while this was a bad look, it was handled properly—until Vance stepped in. There are plenty of qualified candidates. Why rehire someone with baggage? It sends the wrong message
